Finding your life's purpose

To find your life's purpose is to live a life of focus. A life of fulfillment and impact.

The late Dr Myles Munroe, one of the greatest teachers on purpose coined this life-changing truth, “Purpose is only found in the mind of the creator of a thing”. This means that any created thing cannot tell you its purpose. In order to find out why a certain product or item was created, you have to read the owner’s manual or go talk to the creator of that item. Simply defined, purpose is the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.

“Purpose is only found in the mind of the creator of a thing”

The search for the purpose of life has puzzled people for thousands of years. On a mission to help people find the meaning of life, brilliant philosophers, psychologists, life coaches and the likes have advised people to look within themselves to find their purpose. They went further to say that it is up to each individual to give their life meaning because it all starts and ends with self. But all this ended in endless pursuit, leaving people more perplexed and frustrated. This was true thousands of years ago and it’s true today.

Psalm 100:3 in the New American Standard reads, “Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture”. So just as a car cannot tell you the reason for which it was created, so human beings do not have the ability to tell you the purpose for which they were created because they didn’t create themselves. God is the one who created people and He created them for Himself therefore only He can tell each person why He created them.

God is god of purpose. He never does anything without reason. And He doesn’t have accidents or make mistakes either. For many living today, the circumstances surrounding their conception and birth might have been far from ideal but according to God’s word, nobody is an accident. Ephesians 1:11 in the The Message bible reads, “It’s in Christ we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eyes on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone”. This scripture clearly spells out God’s will, God’s heart desire.

Is it quite working out this way in the earth? No. It’s not because not everyone comes to Christ to find out who they are and what they were created for.

God's Design

Before the foundations of the world, God had a plan and he needed people to co-labor with to fulfill His purpose in the earth. So what happened was He broke off little pieces of His giant plan and planted them into the hearts of people, each according to their ability. Since God is god of purpose and does things by predestination, He created people according to what needed to be done to accomplish the plan He’d already prepared. He didn’t do it the other way around. God did not first create people and then He’d try figure out what each person needed to do as they went along, leaving some people hanging around without meaning and direction for their lives.

God created each and every person for very specific reasons and seasons. He went as far to make sure that He instilled and downloaded in each person the abilities and qualities needed to accomplish the mission He has ordained for them. That is how specific and on-purpose God is. God’s plan for eternity is like a giant puzzle made up of billions of pieces and each piece represents each person and their life’s mission. Imagine what happens when people fail to come to God through Jesus to discover and complete their part of the puzzle.

“It is believed that an average adult possesses 500 to 700 gifts, talents and skills. That’s how generous God is”

God created all things, and as mentioned before, this includes human beings. Satan did not create one thing. He only takes what God has created and distorts it to his advantage. Nor have people created themselves or came into being by accident or by spontaneous combustion. This means that every gift, skill and talent each person has is from God. This also means that every person has talents and gifts, because God is no respector of person and He doesn’t show favoritism.

However God deposited these abilities to be used in fulfilling His purpose. And God being a lavish giver downloaded so many incredible gifts and talents in each person. It is believed that an average adult possesses 500 to 700 gifts, talents and skills. These can be artistic talents, practical applications, knowledge in certain areas, discernment in situations, athletic abilities, cooking, hospitality, administration, learning new languages, teaching, communication, the list is endless.

The things you can do well with the least amount of efforts are your talents and gifts and they were meant to be used to fulfill God’s purpose for eternity. They were meant to be used to play a part in a cause that transcend beyond this lifetime. This is why people can exercise the same talents and gifts outside of God and live empty and unfulfilled life but when they turn to God and use the same talents for God’s glory, they find meaning and fulfillment. Things do not work out this way by accident. God ordained it to be this way.

So discovering your talents and gifts is different from discovering your purpose. You can discover your gifting on your own but to find out how, where and when to use those gifting, you have to go to God and ask Him and He’ll show you; that’s purpose. Remember, purpose is only found in the mind of the creator of a thing. Not anywhere else.

“The life of significance that each person so deeply yearns for can never be found outside of God”.

Failure to connect with God to discover one’s life’s purpose does not only mean forfeiting to take part in God’s glorious plan for eternity, it means living a life of hopelessness and despair. Purpose gives you a reason for living. Purpose gives direction. It gives meaning and focus. A life without purpose is why millions of people all over the world got defeated by life and end up living on the streets (this is not true for every person living on the street). A life without purpose is one of the reasons why people engage in destructive behaviors and drift through life, living aimlessly.

Millions of people all over the world are living lives of hopelessness and frustration because they don’t know why they exist. They never came to the Author of life to find out why He created them. They go from one pursuit to another, seeking, hoping to find meaning and fulfillment. But the life of significance that each person so deeply yearns for can never be found outside of God. God is the beginning and the end of all things. It’s only in Him that we discover our origin, our identity, our purpose and our destiny. Every other path is a dead end.
